Blood cancer breakthrough reports are rising from everywhere in the world. There are several researchers who have come up with new and alternative treatments for blood cancer patients. In order to understand the breakthrough that is being made, we need to understand just exactly how blood cancer works up on our bodies. Blood cancer starts by mutation of cells which further grow and intervene with bodily process. Blood cancer has three most common types: Lymphoma, Multiple Myeloma and Leukemia. Blood cancer research helps in exploring subtle blood cancer early signs. All these different cancers may have different methods of affecting the body, but they are all cancers relating to the blood. If the mutated cells flow through the bloodstream, they may affect other essential organs of the body.

With all the new research that is going on, new reports for aiding blood cancers are arising. Let us cover a few ones here. It was in 1832 that a British doctor named Thomas Hodgkin published the first description of lymphoma. Hodgkin's lymphoma was then named. Today, we know lymphoma in two major types, Hodgkin's lymphoma and Non - Hodgkin's Lymphoma. It has been 179 years since then and there have been a lot of new discoveries. Very recently, it has been discovered in Southampton that the use of rituximab could be highly successful in treating patients with Non- Hodgkin's lymphoma. Rituximab has been tried before but even so, the latest discovery is the response of rituximab to the molecule called 'FcgRllB'. However, there are some tests in which patients do not respond to rituximab. This figure goes as high as up to 30%. In order to confirm their result, further tests on a larger scale are being conducted. Rituximab tags the cancer cells so that our immune system can identify it and attack it.

Leukemia has been derived from the Greek words 'leukos' and 'hemia'. These two words together mean 'white blood'. This can be given to the trait of leukemia with which the amount of white blood cells in body increases abnormally. Even if leukemia was recognized by the Greeks in the 4th or the 5th century B.C., it was not officially diagnosed until 1845 in Edinburgh by John Hughes Benett.

Blood Cancer Breakthrough

Another blood cancer breakthrough has been assured by the University of Pennsylvania. This breakthrough indicates relief for leukemia patients. The researchers at the university have modified a virus. This virus infects a patient's T-Cells which are present in the immune system. These infected T- cells carries on commands in order to tie cancer cells together. After this, it ultimately destroys them. It is said that each infected T- Cell destroys up to 1000 cancerous cells. This has been named as a very big breakthrough. Only three patients have been tried on and further studies need to be conducted on a larger number of people.

Nevertheless, it seems to show promising results for now. These three patients have remained free of cancer for a year now. Another promise seems to arise from Canada, where the scientists at the McMaster University have found out that they could convert skin cells into blood cells. These converted cells have red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets too. They seem to function just like normal blood cells. This can prove to be very helpful as compared to chemotherapy. In chemotherapy, the effect can be so strong sometimes that the patients need to be taken off chemotherapy so that they can recover. During this time, the cancer can make an even stronger comeback. This could prove to be a better alternative but researchers will study the topic further for confirmed results.

Gleevec is a drug which has been put to use recently. The results of Gleevec are also very well. GLeevec is actually Imatinib and is marketed by Novartis by the name Gleevec in the United States. It is used for the treatment of chronic myelgenous leukemia. It works by stopping the activities of the cancerous cells. However, it shows no response if the cells are mutated. This is the case in almost 90% of the patients.

Many other researches are still going on all over the world. Researchers are finding out new methods to completely eliminate cancer. However, the best thing advisable is to avoid cancer causing agents. Even if cancer cannot be prevented, the risks can definitely be reduced. The new blood cancer breakthroughs are promising better results and a brighter future.
