Blood cancer cure has not been established to be a 100%. In other words, even though there are treatments available for blood cancer, they do not promise a complete cure. Some therapies work on some individual and may not work on the others. Sometimes, in a completely cured patient, the patient may relapse in to cancer again. The types and methods of treatment of blood cancers have been changing over the years. Today, we see the face of modern science as a possible cure for blood cancer.
Arsenic - The Early Blood Cancer Cure
The very first treatment for blood cancer was mentioned in the Ramayana in India. This treatment was the use of arsenic. Arsenic was used by Hippocrates, Aristotle and Elder. It was in the 18th century that 'Fowler's solution' was created by Thomas Fowler. It was a solution which contained potassium arsenite. This was used to cure a variety of other diseases including leukemia. This was replaced in the early 20th century by radiation therapy. The major reason for eradicating the use of arsenic was because of it carcinogenic properties. Studies have shown that arsenic poses a threat of developing skin and visceral cancers.
In the early 20th century, radiation therapy was put to use. Radiation therapy has shown very effective result on patients suffering from leukemia and most types of lymphomas. In radiation therapy, ionization is used to eliminate cancer. Either a photon or a charged particle causes damage to the DNA of the cancerous cells. Gray is the unit used to measure the amount of radiation and is denoted by 'Gy'. The amount of radiation will depend upon the type of cancer and the stage that the patient is in. There are changes in the doses, in case the patient is already on another treatment or therapy for blood cancer, such as chemotherapy. Ever since 1935, right until today, a lot of changes have occurred in radiation therapy and it can be used effectively today.
No accurate treatments were found for leukemia and other types of blood cancer until after the Second World War. The existence of chemotherapy was actually an accident. In was noted by scientists when the Germans used mustard gas during the world war. When some German soldiers accidentally came in contact with this gas, they were found to have low blood count. Modern chemotherapy is carried by administration of antineoplastic drugs or a combination of such drugs. These drugs destroy rapidly growing cells in the body. It can be quite effective as cancer cells grow at a high rate. There is a fallback however, that is that these drugs are unable to differentiate between cancer cells and rapidly growing normal body cells like hair, so, they destroy these normal healthy cells too. Chemotherapy can also lead to the suppression of the immune system.
This was discovered in 1850 in Germany, when doctors found that the size of the tumor in the patient's body reduced if the tumor got infected. This led to the rise of immunotherapy for the treatment of cancer. This therapy works by making changes or alteration in the immune system. These changes are induced changes. The doctors practice suppression immunotherapy, in which the immune system is suppressed or they can practice activation immunotherapy in which the immune system is amplified. The aim of immunotherapy with respect to cancer is to eliminate or destroy cancer cells with the help of the patient's immune system. This therapy is regarded to be controversial by some doctors.
Bone Marrow Transplant
A bone marrow transplant is when blood stem cells from a donor are transplanted into the body of the patient so that new cell growth and generation can take place. Dr. Edward Donall Thomas, Nobel Prize Laureate, was the first person to conduct a bone marrow transplant. This was in the year 1958. The bone marrow is generally used after chemotherapy and radiation have been harmful. But this may not always be the case. However, sometimes, chemotherapy and radiation therapy can completely destroy the patient's bone marrow. In this case, a bone marrow transplant is the most effective. Before a bone marrow transplant takes place, the patient is put on suppression immunotherapy so that his body will not reject the new harvest. Bone marrow is a spongy tissue which is responsible for the creation of healthy red blood cells. This is found in abundance in the hip bone. Generally, donors are close family members. The types of bone marrows must also match. Bone marrow has saved thousands of lives since it was first performed Even if one establishes that blood cancer cure may not exist, a large number of people have gotten a second chance at life due the procedures mentioned above. There are new discoveries being made every day and the attempt to save lives is increasing.
