Blood cancer prevention can start at home. By making small changes in your lifestyle, you can do a lot to keep blood cancer at bay. Although, it is wrong to say that blood cancer can be prevented, by taking certain precautions, you can reduce your risk of developing blood cancer.

Blood cancer is not just one particular cancer, instead it comprises of a lot of types of cancers which are collectively known as blood cancer. The most commonly found blood cancers are leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Blood cancer is a fatal condition. Avoidance or ignorance would not be in your best interest.

One of the major cancers that smoking can lead to is known as acute myelogenous leukemia. Shockingly, one person out of every 4 people who have acute myelogenous leukemia is due to smoking. Benzene is a chemical with which we come in very regular contact with. Benzene is one of the many chemicals found in cigarettes. Benzene is a by- product of petroleum and coal. Benzene is also found in other substances like paints, detergents, pesticides, etc. Benzene increases the risk of leukemia. Leukemia is a major type of blood cancer which affects the bone marrow or the bone and is generally characterized by excessive white blood cells.


Radiation is one of the key factors responsible for increase risks for cancer. Blood cancer occurs due to mutation of certain cells. Radiation can promote mutation. Patients who are currently on chemotherapy or on radiation therapy for the treatment of another type of cancer can increase their risk for developing blood cancer. We can be exposed to radiation in our normal life activities. Some sources of radiation include, X- Rays and nuclear fallouts. Even the sun's rays expose us to radiation; however, this radiation is in small amount and is not very harmful. Try to keep yourself away from exposure to radiation. In cases where it cannot be avoided (such as medical procedures) not much can be done.

Maintaining a healthy diet ensures a healthy body. Take care of what you consume and especially reduce intake of red meat and processed meats. Another useful tip is to reduce intake of fatty foods. Foods that promote weight gain and fat gain are not only unhealthy for the heart but can even increase your risk of blood cancer. Cancer cells have a tendency to feed on fat cells and the fatty acids promote the growth of cancerous cells. Some studies suggest that the association of diet and cancer is of 35%. So, 35% of cancer cases are due to unhealthy dietary habits.

Unprotected Sex

We all already know the risks that unprotected sex poses. Indulging in unprotected sex can attract a variety of sexually transmitted diseases including herpes, HIV and HPV. When cancer cells begin to accumulate in the body, our immune system is unable to detect and attack them. Having a disease like HIV can definitely increase your chance for developing blood cancer as this disease weakens your immune system and thus makes you more vulnerable to cancer. HPV is responsible for a lot of cases of cancer. There are several things you can do to increase blood cancer prevention. Exercising is a habit that will take you a long way. Remember regular exercise , a healthy diet and avoiding cigarettes will not only reduce your risks for cancer but also keep you fit and provide you with a healthy immune. Stay healthy, live longer!
