Cervical cancer or cancer of the cervix has had been a common death causing cancer in women around the world. Most poor survival rates were reported with this cancer, being the second highest death-causing cancer in the women.

Many women may even survive more than 5 years after the detection of cervical cancer. The studies of survival rates are not individualistic and involve a large group of patients to analyze a close figure of life expectancy in the patients.

Survival rate also differs according to various factors such as the stage in which the cancer is diagnosed and also the patient's response to a treatment or even whether a patient is receiving a treatment or not.

Survival Rates by Stages:

Doctors use survival rates as a measure to determine the cervical cancer prognosis of the treatment in a patient diagnosed with cervical cancer. The 5 year survival rate is calculated by collecting data of patients, who have undergone cancer treatment before 5 years to decide the percentage of people living for at least 5 years after being diagnosed with cancer.

Though, survival rate statistics may be mainly dependent upon the stage at which cancer is determined, but the data may vary from individual to individual depending upon the factors such as response of cancer to the curing technique and patient's overall health.

Following are the details of cancer's 5 year survival rate against the stage:

  • Stage 0 - This stage is also known as carcinoma situ. The 5-year survival rate chances are the maximum at this stage. People diagnosed with cervical cancer and who have initiated immediate treatment is most likely to live for 5 year and long. The percentage of survival rate at this stage of cancer is around 93%.

  • Stage IA - This is also considered as an early stage of cancer. People diagnosed at this stage are usually eligible for conventional surgical treatment techniques. Survival rate for 5 years or more are likely to be around 90 to 93%.

  • Stage IB - Till the earlier stages, cancer growth is not visible without the aid of microscope, whereas in stage IB it can be seen without the aid of microscope. The treatment techniques during this stage may include surgical removal of the cancer growth followed by chemotherapy or radiation therapy alone or in combination.

    These treatments are important to make sure that no cancer cells remain active or alive in the surrounding region, from where the surgical removal of the tumor has been performed. The survival rate with effective treatment lies between 80-90%.

  • Stage II - This is termed as an advanced stage characterized by metastasized cancer growth that spreads beyond the uterus and the surrounding lymph nodes, but has not invaded into the vagina or to the pelvis wall.

    The treatment options during this stage may be surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy or only chemotherapy and radiation therapies in isolation or combination. Successful treatments offer 5 year survival rate percentage in a range of 60-65%.

  • Stage III - This is an invasive cancer that spreads to the surface of the kidney and may show up symptoms related to it. Treatments offered are chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Survival rates fall in between 40-45%.

  • Stage IV - This is the last stage of cancer and so is far dangerous than any of the former stages. This stage has the poorest survival rate percentage of around 15-20%. The invasion of cancer affects the distant organs of the body and may cause multiple problems, which are difficult to treat.

Cervical cancer survival rate has definitely seen huge improvement over the decades due to the increased awareness and breakthrough treatments. However, there is no cervical cancer cure discovered for the disease, vital contribution to a better prognosis and better survival rate percentages is made by early detection and effective treatment.

This killer-disease has come under significant control and has steadily decreased the death rate due to it over decades. With regular screening, the survival rates are anticipated to rise over every year.
