Gastric cancer is difficult to identify in the earlier stages and hence the patients remain undiagnosed for longer time. The signs and symptoms of stomach cancer are more visible in the advanced stages than in the primary stages. Doctors are performing studies and researches to know the exact causes of this cancer. Apart from their gastric cancer research to know the causes and prevention remedies, some scientists are looking for the advanced treatment options to treat this threatening disease.

Before introducing any new therapy or treatment, it is made certain that they are fully researched. They are ready to be adopted as a standard treatment, once they are proved to be effective in more than two attempts. Mostly these new researched options are adopted since they work better than the usual treatments in some cases. They are approved once they are proved effective as well as safe. First of all, new gastric cancer research is developed and tested in the laboratories. They are rectified as safe to be used as clinical trials.

Gastric cancer research is based on:

More researchers are seeking for the causes and prevention techniques of stomach cancer, finding out the extent at which the cancer has grown, chemotherapy, surgery, controlling symptoms, biological therapies and preventing weight loss.

Why to perform gastric cancer research?

All the treatments and therapies should be completely researched before they are adopted or rectified as a standard treatment to treat the stomach cancer patients. These treatments are carried out so that,

  • We can be certain that they are effective
  • We can be certain that they are more effective than the treatments which are already in use
  • They are proved to be safe

What is the procedure for conducting research?

The very first step is to develop and test the treatments in the laboratories. For the purpose of safety and ethics, new experimental treatments are tested in the laboratories prior to trying or applying them on the patients. If the outcome of the treatments is doubtful, they are considered to be at the laboratory stage of research. It indicates that it is not ready for the patients to adopt.

New tests for patients are also called as clinical trials. New researches successfully help to get effective clinical trials that may work best than the standard treatments for some patients with stomach cancer. Patients have the independence to prefer the option of clinical trials in the place of usual treatment options. If your doctor feels that a particular clinical trial may fit your conditions best they would refer you to the research team.

Note: All the new approaches are based on the ongoing research. Until their studies are completed which depicts that they are safe and effective to use they cannot be applied as a standard treatments to treat stomach cancer.

What's new in gastric cancer research?

In addition to research for the new techniques to look for the causes and preventive measures for stomach cancer, researchers continue to find the advanced techniques of treatments.

Several cancer causing factors creates alterations in the body cells that produces a form of chemical termed as free radicals. These chemicals may damage some significant body cells such as genes. If this damage is severe, they may convert the normal cells into cancerous one. Antibiotics work as a group of nutrients and chemicals that help to prevent the formation of free radicals or eliminate them if they are formed.

Studies have revealed that use of antibiotics to treat Helicobacter pylori infection can be helpful to reduce the formation of cancer cells in the stomach. As per studies, treating this bacterial infection may reduce the possibilities of pre-cancerous abnormalities in the stomach. But more research is required.

Use of natural or man-made drugs to reduce the risk of developing cancer can be termed as chemoprevention. Antibiotics and antioxidants are the two significant types of chemicals that might be used in preventing the formation of cancer cells in the stomach. Although it's not approved, antibiotics can help to prevent the possibilities of gastric cancer recurrence in a person.

As per some studies, the patients who had cancer in the upper part of the stomach after operation or surgery can be provided with aspirin. Studies revealed that patients who were given aspirin were more likely to stay alive for five years after the diagnosis as compared to the patients who didn't. This is being looked at a broader view and thus studies are continued.

Studies and researches are still going on to cope with the risk factors and causes of stomach cancer. New editions of gastric cancer research keeps on adding often.
