Lip cancer detection at an early stage is very important. This is a cancer which affects the lips primarily and then the whole mouth. This cancer does not have early symptoms and so it gets difficult for an individual to detect the issues, as the symptoms are very much similar to any normal lip problem or oral issue. This is not a very common cancer and is seen mostly in men. This cancer mainly develops because of excessive use of alcohol, tobacco and over exposure to sun.

Lip cancer early detection can save your life

  • If the cancer is detected early and timely treatment is given to the patients, the deaths will reduce tremendously
  • This cancer has a five year survival rate of almost 80%
  • Though this cancer has not many early symptoms, but one can know the changes in the tissues and the physical lip changes

Lip cancer detection can be done with the help of following tests and aids

  1. Light based detection Systems:
    • These are systems which use various types of chemiluminescence, blue white LED, and auto fluorescence as light sources.
    • These lights are designed to detect the abnormal growths in the tissues within the lips which cannot be detected with the help of naked eye
    • In this test, the patient is made to rinse his mouth with an acid for about a minute
    • Then the lights of the room are dimmed and the lips and the other parts of the oral cavity are examined
    • The portion which has the abnormal growth will appear in white color
    • This test approximately takes about 10 minutes and can be done only at licensed clinics, hospitals and dentists

  2. Fluorescence Visualization Technology
    • This is also a light based test to detect the lip cancer
    • A blue light from a specific distance, with the help of a lamp is moved over the lips to detect and see some growth within the tissues
    • If any part of the lip becomes fluorescent green in color, it means that the area has cancerous growth
    • The healthy tissue will appear in a rust or of a pale green color
    • This test too is available with the surgeons and dentists

  3. Brush Cytology
    • This test is also called as transepithelial oral brush biopsy
    • The main aim of this test is to detect the asymptomatic, precancerous red and white dysplasia, chronic ulcers, and thick or traumatized mucosa
    • In this test, a sample of the cells found in the outer or inner layers of the lips
    • This sample is collected with the help of a brush
    • In this test, the brush is rotated over the lining of the lips at least 15 times with pressure
    • This helps in color change on the lips, they may turn bright pink and also blood might erupt from the infected areas
    • This brush is then placed on a dry slide and is observed under a micro-scope
    • The results are found with the help of laboratory testing

  4. Saliva tests
    • Lip Cancer DetectionSaliva testing is the recent trend to check oral cancer or lip cancer
    • In saliva testing, the doctor can detect the presence of squamous cell, which is a carcinoma, a cause of cancer
    • Saliva testing is one the newest technique of lip cancer detection

The easiest way for lip cancer detection is to know the signs and symptoms of lip cancer well. Even if there is a slight change in that particular body part, one can detect this cancer well. One should visit a dentist on a regular basis and definitely more after the age of 50 years. The only unfortunate part about this cancer is that the symptoms are not very much visible to most of the people in the beginning and this cancer is detected at a later stage.
