Liver cancer prevention can be done in the following ways,

Prevent hepatitis: Hepatitis B and C are known to severely damage the liver. This may lead to liver cancers such as hepatocellular carcinoma. Hepatitis spreads through sharing personal toiletries like blades and toothbrushes, using pre contaminated needles, blood transfusion, from pregnant mother to her unborn child and unprotected sex. To prevent hepatitis B and C, one must take the following steps,

  • Avoid reuse and exchange of personal items like toothbrush or razors
  • Avoid unprotected sex or sex with multiple partners. Wear a condom with your partner. To be doubly sure, make sure your partner is not infected with HBV or HCV
  • Make sure blood transfusions are done in a clean environment with blood donor who does not have hepatitis
  • Make sure to use only disposable syringes and strictly do not reuse them
  • Hepatitis vaccines are now available. Children must be injected with hepatitis vaccines by prescription from a doctor.
  • If you are going to have a tattoo, doubly make sure that the tattoo parlor uses sterilized instruments like needles. Same goes for barber shops and beauty salons where the razors, blades and scissors must be sterilized

Prevent chronic infections and other diseases: Chronic infections related to the abdomen are a chief cause of liver cirrhosis. Disease like diabetes can irreparably damage the liver besides increasing the risk of liver cancer. To avoid such diseases and infections ensure you take the following steps,

  • Eat clean food and drink clean water. Avoid food from unhygienic resources like roadside food stalls
  • Eat properly cooked food. Avoid or half smoked raw meat
  • Avoid too spicy or too oily food or very high calorie food.
  • Lower your refined sugar intake. Take special precautions if someone in your family has diabetes
  • Rush to your doctor if you see any signs of digestive disorders or infections
  • Physical inactivity can make you prone to variety of diseases. Exercise regularly to avoid such diseases and remember regular exercise can help you get rid of obesity which is known to increase risk of liver cancer

Have a healthy diet: A balanced diet helps to avoid a huge number of diseases including liver cancer. Avoid over eating. Have small helpings of food many times a day instead of having heavy meals at a time. Avoid indulging in too hot or too cold or too spicy food. Do try to lose weight by being on a lean diet. Vegetables, fruits and red meats are good sources of nutrients like l-carnitine.

Make sure you have a regular intake of pulses like peas and lentils, vegetables like okra, broccoli, garlic and asparagus. Include a healthy measure of cereals like oatmeal, wheat germ and rye and a wide variety of nuts with seeds like sunflower seeds. Fruits such as oranges, bananas, apricots and avocados are a great source of vital nutrients. Codfish, chicken breasts and pork must be cooked properly before eating.

Avoid alcohol intake: Every time you drink alcohol, it damages your liver. Alcohol contains many carcinogens that disrupt the functioning of the liver cells. Long term alcoholism definitely causes liver damage and cirrhosis. Each time you think of gulping down that extra glass of alcohol, think of the damage that it can do not only to your liver but also to your kidneys and stomach.

Thus, remember that liver cancer prevention is certainly better than liver cancer cure. Liver cancer prevention can certainly help you save your liver from one the most deadly cancers. Do consider making such healthy changes to your day to day life.
