Lung cancer is the cancer that develops in the lungs. The primary function of the lungs is to replace impure blood with pure blood which is done by tiny sacs present in the lungs called as alveolis. The bronchus which is the major air passage becomes narrow gradually to form bronchioles which have tiny sacs like structure at the end which are called as alveoli where the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen takes place. The pure or oxygenated blood is then carried to the heart from where it is circulated to other body parts by the arteries. Arteries are the blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood from the heart to other body parts and veins are the blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood from other body parts to the heart. Lung cancer is basically caused due to addiction of smoking cigarettes. If not treated early it can invade surrounding organs.

Lung Cancer Symptoms and Early Signs:

Majority of people have symptoms when the cancer is diagnosed. But few of the people do not show any symptoms when the cancer is diagnosed. The symptoms start showing because of direct effects of malignant tumors or changes or disturbances in the hormones or blood.

Some of the symptoms of lung cancer are enlisted below:

  1. Coughing that gets severe gradually or that does not stop eventually is a sign of lung cancer. One must not delay the appointment with the doctor when coughing is persistent for more than two weeks.
  2. Hemoptysis i.e. blood coming from the cough or coughing of blood is one of the major signal that the body gives to indicate lung cancer. Even if the cough has very small amount of blood, still it is a cause of concern.
  3. Chest pain is a common lung cancer early sign faced by almost one fourth of lung cancer patients.
  4. Complications in breathing or respiratory infections can also be an indication of lung cancer.
  5. A person who smokes or who was a smoker can often show a different type of cough. Most often such a sign is a signal for lung cancer.
  6. Shortness of breath results due to blockage of air flow in certain parts of lungs. When a tumor is developed in the lung, it is logical that it will block flow of air passage in that particular part. Hence, shortness of breath should not be ignored. It must be consulted with the doctor as early as possible.
  7. Wheezing can also be a sign of lung cancer as it indicates blockage or inflammation in the lungs.
  8. Hoarseness is also another indicator of inflammation or blockage in the lungs.
  9. Pneumonia or bronchitis
  10. Weight loss
  11. Loss of appetite
  12. Fatigue or feeling of dullness for most of the times
  13. Experiencing numbness in the arms or legs
  14. Tingling sensation in the arms or legs
  15. Cough

Enlisted above are the lung cancer early signs and symptoms. If any of these symptoms or early signs is consistent for more than a week or two, it must not be neglected and shown to the doctor soon. Remember that lung cancer is curable only when it is diagnosed and treated in its initial stages.

Tumor can be detected in a chest x-ray. Your doctor may perform several tests to detect and confirm the presence of a cancerous tumor. Accordingly by the size of tumor and where it has spread treatment is decided. Radiotherapy, chemotherapy and medication are treatments often used in combination to cure cancer.

It is proved that about 70 to 80 percent of lung cancer cases are caused due to smoking cigarettes. If one wants to reduce the chances of developing cancer then one must quit the habit of smoking. Exposure to asbestos dust and lead dust are also factors that lead to lung cancer. Inculcating good eating habits, exercising regularly, keeping away from stress, spending time with nature and enough sleep are key factors that will not only reduce the chances of developing cancer but also enhance your quality of living.
