Several cancer research centers are established to create new researches on metastatic cancer. They are dedicated to understand the process of cancer metastasis on molecular, cellular and biochemical basis. They deal with identifying the therapeutic potentials that would help in the halting of the metastatic process, evaluating them by pre clinical process; designing and implementing some new clinical trials in order to bring these innovative therapeutic strategies in use. Metastatic cancer research has evolved with a number of effective clinical trials that are useful to deal with cancer.

Metastasis is the process of cancer spread. In metastasis, the cancer cells get spread from the original site into the other parts of the body. This is a complex process which can be explained partially on the molecular and biochemical levels. Cancer surgery followed by radiation therapy is the most common treatment options to destroy the primary tumor from the body. It is the metastasis of cancer (spread of cancer cells into distant body structures) which contributes to the mortality or morbidity among the cancer patients.

What is new in metastatic cancer research?

In 2007, a nanotechnology method was evolved to differentiate or identify the cancer cells among the normal cells in a cancer patient. This nano science provided a great scope to detect the cancer cells in the fluids present in the cavity of the body. This methods also aid in customizing the treatment options for the patients. When the cancer metastases, the cancerous cells start invading the organs by travelling to the other body parts through the blood vessels and the lymphatic system. Since the cancer cells have to maneuver through fixed anatomical spaces, they are more flexible and softer in nature as compared to the normal cells.

The spreading and invasion of cancer cells contributes to the accumulation of fluids in the cavities of the body (abdomen and chest). But the formation of fluids does not always mean that the patient has cancer cells in the body. Once the fluid is analyzed with the presence of cancer cells, the oncologists can make out the aggressiveness of the cells and thus look for an appropriate cancer treatment option. As per the evidences, the cancer cells have large nuclei when observed under the microscope. This makes it easy for the researchers to identify the cancer cells among the normal cells. In the next metastatic cancer research the scientists will evolve a nano-mechanical analysis to personalize the cancer treatment for a particular patent.

What is new in metastatic cancer breakthrough?

As per the researches a metastatic melanoma breakthrough can be helpful to treat the colon, breast and lung cancer. A metastatic melanoma is rarely orphan. It is little vexing to treat this cancer. PLX 4032 is a phase I trial drug which helps to inhibit a mutation in BRAF (a gene) which is thought to stimulate the cancer cells. BRAF is found in at least half of the people undergoing metastatic melanoma; it has also been observed in 5 to 10 percent of patients with lung, colon, and breast and thyroid cancer.

Metastatic cancer breakthrough to treat sarcoma is also helpful with ovarian and breast cancer:

Another drug or medicine known as Brivanib, also works well in prying the bond between the unique receptor and the growth factor. Brivanib work as a small molecule restrainer, as it binds the factor receptor that develops the fibroblast. It also prevents the chain reaction that tends to form an uncontrollable growth of cancer cells. It's truly an effective medication to treat sarcoma along with ovarian and breast cancer.

A breakthrough for treating sarcoma may also work well in treating prostate as well as breast cancer:

This metastatic cancer breakthrough deals with focusing on the proteins that stimulates the cancer cells which are termed as growth factor receptors. As per the evidences IGF-1R stimulates the growth of cancer cells. In this case the new IGF-blocking drugs help to lock the receptors and ignite the growth of the cancer cells. It aids to freeze them or make inactive so the cancer cannot spread further.

Some more analysis is still going on to discover some new metastatic cancer research and breakthrough plans. Some are yet to prove clinically effective while some are adopted as the standard treatments to cure the metastatic cancer.
