The benefits of diagnosing the disease are immense. Regular screening of cancer found in prostate glands help men to get a perfect cure. Without proper study of prostate cancer, doctors cannot determine the early stages of these tumors. Many cancer tumors found in the male prostate region assume an aggressive form during later stages. The screening of cancer tumors is to be done at a proper time with appropriate equipments. Doctors can choose a suitable cure after a successful prostate cancer diagnosis.

Tests recommended for diagnosing the disease:

PSA test: This test is also known as Prostate Specific Antigen test. Prostate Specific Antigen is a special protein produced in cells of prostate glands. It is found in men belonging to all age groups. When quantity of this antigen increases, the prostate gland becomes enlarged in size. PSA test is taken by a skilled physician to measure the quantity of PSA in the blood of patients with prostate cancer. These tests have to be taken along with digital rectification examination. The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute claims that PSA test is given for early detection of prostate cancer.

Digital rectal examination: It is also known as DRE. This exam is taken by an urologist. In this exam, the doctor diagnoses a male's rectum with a lubricated finger. This test takes a couple of minutes and it is not painful. An experienced urologist can take this test. Digital rectal examination is always taken with a PSA test. According to urologist Patrick Walsh M.D, nearly 25 percent males are detected with prostate cancer through a digital exam.

Magnetic resonance imaging: It is a computerized method of scanning images of prostate region. It displays cross sectional photos of prostate region. By resorting to these methods, doctors get help to know the actual condition of disease of prostate cancer. Ultrasound: This technology uses sound waves of high frequency to create computerized images. It uses ultrasound equipment in the form of a sensor. The device is moved over the prostate region of the body.

CT scan: The CT scan is also known as computed tomography. It is an advanced technology in which rotating beings of x rays are produced. These beams produce images of bones, blood vessels and soft tissues.

Biopsy: Biopsy is a method in which small samples of tissues are taken by using a surgical needle. Sample tissues are examined and studied under a microscope. This is a highly accurate way to detect the presence of prostate tumors.

Points to be considered for diagnosing prostate cancer:

Prostate cancer diagnosis is done by taking following points into consideration:

  1. Men in the age group of 50-75 yrs should be provided with a PSA test and rectal examination in digital mode. These techniques help to know the actual stage of cancer tumors in the prostate region. If any male needs a prostate cancer diagnosis for detection of the disease, he should be screened annually through digital rectal examination and PSA test.

  2. Males in the age group of 40-45 should be diagnosed with above mentioned tests annually. These tests are necessary for those who have a family history of prostate cancer. Those belonging to African-American race should also take PSA tests annually after having crossed the age of 40.

  3. PSA testing is not advised by doctors to those men whose age is above 75 years. The life span of these males may get reduced, if doctors believe in abnormal PSA results and opt for an aggressive treatment.

According to prostate cancer research, every year more than 40,000 males around the world are diagnosed with cancer of prostate glands. Fortunately, biomedical engineers at the University of Pennsylvania have developed some effective techniques. These techniques are computer aided diagnosis (CAD) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). All these techniques help doctors in detecting the presence of tumors in the prostate gland. Some techniques of prostate cancer also point towards hidden cancerous tissues. These tissues can be diagnosed more with a biopsy. The prostate cancer diagnosis has been reported to be highly successful with an ultrasound sensor. The tube of this sensor is inserted in the male rectum. The sound waves of the device create images that clearly display pictures of prostate tumors.
