Prostate Cancer Treatment
Prostate cancer treatment becomes essential when the disease reaches at an alarming point. Many kinds of scans and diagnosis have to be done before choosing a particular treatment. Most techniques used in diagnosis of prostate cancer are biopsy, gleason score and tumor markers. Gleason score is a latest technique of diagnosing the disease. Some samples of prostate tissues are tested under a microscope. The presence of cancer is detected through a score known as Gleason score. Every year new techniques of curing prostate cancer are invented. Some important techniques of curing cancer of prostate gland are being discussed below.
Prostate Brachytheraphy: This is a quick radiation therapy conducted by radiation oncologists. A cancer surgeon or oncologist performs a minimally invasive surgery, to plant prostate cancer seeds. A team of doctors design a format of prostate seed implantation. Doctors also make use of transrectal ultrabound to take images of prostate. This device also takes pictures of organs surrounding the prostate gland. After taking images of prostate region surgeons set a series of small and flexible catheters to insert in the prostate gland. While conducting the procedure of Prostate Brachytheraphy iridium-194 seeds are used. These seeds are inserted by using catheters made of plastic and rigid steel. An experienced urologist can even use these catheters to maneuver around a prostate gland of enlarged size. Most patients undergoing Prostate Brachytheraphy can carry their daily activities with ease. Doctors provide patients with medications and injections to eliminate side effects of Prostate Brachytheraphy.
Salvage chemotherapy: This technique is very popular for easy and effective prostate cancer treatment. It is given by professional chemotherapists. Doctors provide small quantities of medicines to patients after detecting cancer tumors in their prostate region. They recommend oral pills and injections of low dose to counteract the effects of cancer tumors in the prostate gland. Small doses of chemotherapy medicines benefit the patients by enhancing their immunity to prostate cancer. Doxorubicin is one such drug that is used to cure prostate cancer tumors. This drug activates DNA in human beings to produce specific proteins. These proteins make the body of patients immune to the effects of prostate tumors.
Minimally invasive prostate cancer surgery: This surgery is also called Cryotherapy. Patients are required to stay at the hospital for 2-3 days to undergo this surgery. During Cryotherapy the patient is treated with general anesthesia. His body is also kept in a position called dorsal lithotomy. In this kind of position, his legs are kept open and lifted to 90 degrees. His perineum is kept on the end point of the operating table. The surgeon uses transrectal ultrasound to take images of the prostate gland. A surgical transperinal needle helps the needles of cryotherapy to get attached with the skin of the patient's perineum. Argon gas is spread through cryogenic needles among cancer tumors of prostate glands. This procedure is done 2-3 times and is termed as freeze thaw cycle.
Argon gas helps to destroy cancer tumors in the prostate region.
Radiation therapy: This is one of the most popular techniques of prostate cancer treatment. In this technique, a conventional beam of electrons are focused on prostate cancer tumors. These beams are generally in the form of EBRT, IMRT and 3D-CRT. Photons are the main constituent units of these beams; they have the same type of power as used in X-Rays. Radiation therapy is of many kinds like 3 dimensional conformal radiation therapy, intensity oriented radiation beam therapy and proton beam radiation therapy. Radiation therapy destroys cancer tumors within 5 to 9 weeks. It means that this kind of treatment is to be given multiple times till 5 to 9 weeks.
Continuous exposure of cancer cells in the prostate gland to powerful radiations reduces them in volume. Finally these cells are totally destroyed, and patients start experiencing relief from symptoms of prostate cancer.
Hormone therapy: This therapy is an easy way to reduce effects of cancer tumors. Anti androgens are special hormones that are used for curing prostate cancer. Anti-androgens are those hormones that block interaction of testosterone cells and those of prostate cancer. In normal conditions, testosterone hormone in men binds itself with cells of prostate tumors and allows them to grow. Anti androgen technique does not allow testosterone to combine with tumors of prostate.
Robotic assisted prostatectomy: This prostate cancer treatment is also called laparoscopic prostatectomy. It is a robotic surgery; it is now being counted among the latest surgeries to cure prostate cancer. Special robotic instruments and 3d imaging devices are used to remove cancer affected portion of prostate gland. Small incisions are made using these devices. Surgeons use special needles to remove cancer tumors in the prostate glands. During the procedure of robotic prostatectomy an oncologist operates, on the patient's body through robotic arms. This is done even from a remote location. The two robotic arms are well scaled and have all kinds of instrumental applications. Every surgical robotic arm is loaded with an endoscope that helps doctors to have a three dimensional view of the cancer afflicted part in prostate gland. Finally, surgeons work successfully and operate on prostate cancer tumors to eliminate them completely. The main benefits of robotic prostatectomy are clear prostate overview, effective instrument applications and robotic treatment with perfection.
Prostate removal surgery: This surgery is an alternative to robotic prostatectomy; it is performed by surgeons when cancer spreads in the entire region of prostate gland. This surgery is the last option to save the patient from attack of prostate cancer tumors. Some other techniques of cancer treatment are also prevalent, however these are chosen according to the magnitude of disease in the body of patients.
What to do after prostate cancer surgery cure:
After taking prostate cancer surgery or cure, patients need consistent rest till 10 to 15 days. They need not eat heavy food or full diet during this period. They can derive nutrition and energy by drinking fruit juices. Light vegetable soups can also help them to remain fit. Patients also need to make regular checkups and self care after prostate cancer treatment.
