Skin cancer is a type of tumor that occurs when the outer layers of the skin are affected by the cancer cells. Skin cancer mostly occurs due to over exposure of the outer layers of the skin to ultra violet radiations. This tumor can also occur in other areas which do not come in direct contact with these ultraviolet radiations. Skin cancer awareness makes us aware of the symptoms, causes, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. There are many research institutes and organizations which are working towards spreading awareness of this disease. Skin cancer is classified into three types:-

  • Malignant cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Basal cell carcinoma

Malignant cell carcinoma is a type of tumor that tends to grow at a rapid rate. This is the fastest growing tumor of all skin cancer. This cancer is larger in size. The average size of this tumor is 6mm in diameter.

Squamous cell carcinoma is a type of tumor that appears in the form of bumps and scales. They are pale yellow, red or crusted in color. Basal cell carcinoma is a type of tumor which occurs in the form of ulcers on the outer layer of the skin. These ulcers are red or fleshy in color. The occurrence of this tumor is also known as translucency.

Skin cancer Awareness:

Symptoms of this tumor are as follows:

  • Occurrence of moles that are pale yellow or red in color
  • Injury that is not getting healed from a long time
  • Occurrence of lumps in the areas that are exposed to UV rays. These areas include arms, neck and face
  • Constant unknown bleeding from the outer layers of the skin

Skin cancer causes:

The major cause of this tumor is overexposure to ultraviolet radiations. Other causes of this tumor include:-

  • Environmental factors
  • Smoking
  • Weakness in immune system
  • Viral infections

Skin cancer diagnosis:

The best diagnosing technique for this cancer is a procedure called biopsy. In this procedure, a piece of tumor is removed from the location and is examined under a microscope by performing several tests. Other techniques conducted for diagnosing this tumor include blood tests, X-rays and a physical examination. In the physical examination, several questions will be asked to find out the exact reason for this tumor.

He will ask you the following questions:

  • Whether any of your family members has suffered from this disease.
  • What are the food items that you consume on a daily basis
  • How long does your body gets exposed to ultraviolet radiations

If any doubtful issue arises he will do a thorough analysis. Treatment of skin cancer disease should be started as soon as the diagnosis procedure is done. Treating this tumor at early stages helps to prevent recurrence of the tumor.

Skin cancer Treatment:-

Skin cancer treatment is done with the help of several techniques. These techniques include Topical chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy, topical immunotherapy, cryotherapy radiotherapy and surgery.

In surgery, the tumor is removed from the body with the help of surgical procedure. In this procedure, a small layer of outer skin is removed from the location. After this, all malignant cells and the tumor are completely removed from the location. This skin is later replaced with flaps. Flaps are layers of healthy skin which are taken from a healthy person.

Radiotherapy involves the removal of tumor with the help of high radiation waves. These rays are high in density and destroy the malignant cells and tumor on the spot.

In topical chemotherapy, a cream is prescribed for the removal of tumor. When this cream is applied on the location, the tumor cells get destroyed completely.

In Photodynamic therapy a combination of drugs and light sources is used for destroying the tumor while radiotherapy involves the use of radioactive radiation for the destruction of this tumor.

Cryotherapy is a procedure in which liquid nitrogen is injected in the location of the tumor. This liquid freezes the tumor on spot. After this, the tumor is removed with the help of a surgical procedure.

Out of all these treatments, Topical chemotherapy, radiotherapy, photodynamic therapy and cryotherapy are the treatments that are widely used as they guarantee the successful removal of the tumor and are easy to perform.

As this cancer is of minor type, people are unaware of its causes, treatment and diagnosis. However, many research institutions are working towards spreading skin cancer awareness.
