Skin cancer often known as skin neoplasm is a type of tumor that develops when the malignant cells attack the tissues of the skin. These cells tend to attack the outer layers of the skin which gets exposed. So it mainly occurs in body parts such as face, neck, arms and shoulders. The outer layer of the skin is responsible for storing water and heat. Skin cancer causes vary according to the type of skin.
This cancer is divided into three types:-
- Basal cell carcinoma
- Malignant carcinoma
- Squamous cell carcinoma
Basal cell carcinoma is considered as the most common type of skin cancer. It occurs in the upper layer of the skin and grows at a very slow rate. This cancer is majorly seen in people in the age group of 35 to 50 years. It may occur due to overexposure to ultraviolet radiations and can also occur due to X-ray radiations. In this type of skin cancer, the affected part appears to be pink or whitish in colour. Bleeding can also be observed
Malignant carcinoma is a type of skin cancer which is rarely seen. The location where the tumor occurs is generally about 5 to 6 mm in diameter. Colour variations may be observed in the area and there is no certain area of occurrence. Amongst all skin cancers, this tumor is very hard to cure.
Squamous cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer in which the tumor grows at a rapid rate. A burning sensation or pain is observed in the area of occurrence. A bump mole or a red patch is observed at the area of location of the tumor. This tumor can be detected at early stages and there are treatment options available which guarantee the removal of the tumor.
Skin cancer causes:-
- Viral infection
- Environmental factors
- Excessive Smoking
- Weakened immune system
- Overexposure to UV radiation
Explanation of skin cancer causes:-
- Viral Infection :-
This infection is generally observed in people who have weakened immune system. Due to weakened immune system our body is constantly attacked by viruses and bacteria. Viruses such as herpes simplex, human pappiloma, Epstein Barr and herpes zoster attack the genesis of the skin and due to this the tumor gets developed. So people suffering from skin infection are advised to have healthy diet.
- Environmental factors :-
This tumor can also occur due to environmental contaminants. Different environmental contaminants such as aromatic hydrocarbons and other substances released through vehicles and contaminants produced due to burning of wood can also cause this cancer. So the person should try to keep himself away from such contaminated gases.
- Excessive Smoking :-
Smoking is also considered as a cause of this tumor. Smoking has some harmful ingredients such as aromatic hydrocarbons and nitrosamines. These ingredients are very harmful for the skin and they can result in tumors
- Weakened immune system :-
Weakened immune system is also considered as the cause of this disease. Due to weakened immune system, our body is not able to fight against attacking bacteria and other viruses. Due to this various deficiencies get developed in the body. So they are unable to resist the attack of malignant cells of this tumor. Due to this, the tumor of this cancer starts developing.
- Overexposure to Ultraviolet radiations :-
Ultra violet radiation contains particles that are harmful for the skin. Direct exposure to these radiations increases the chances of occurrence of this tumor as they are not able to resist these highly transmissible and they tend to destroy vitamin A present in the skin. People who get exposed to these radiations constantly tend to develop freckles and other spots on a regular basis which are considered as the early signs of this tumor.
In order to prevent the occurrence of this tumor, it is very important to understand skin cancer causes and its symptoms. American Cancer Research in their report concludes that more than 20.000 cases of this tumor are diagnosed every year. Various researches are being conducted and breakthroughs are being made in the treatment and diagnosis sector of the tumor to increase the survival rate.
