Skin cancer develops due to growth of tumors or polyps in the skin layers. This cancer occurs due to overexposure to ultraviolet radiations. This cancer is majorly seen on body parts such as arms, neck and face. This tumor can also occur in parts which do not get directly exposed to sunlight. Symptoms of this cancer are easy to detect but they are often confused as skin infections. This cancer has become a serious problem due to pollution and environmental factors. More than 20,000 people are diagnosed with this tumor every year. Skin cancer stages differ according to the nature, type and diagnosis of the tumor and its spread in the body parts.
Symptoms of Skin cancer:-
- Infections that are taking time to heal
- Occurrence of bumps in area which are exposed to ultraviolet radiations
- Occurrence of moles in the body parts such as arms, neck and face. These moles are pale yellow or red in colour. They are also
asymmetrical in manner.
- Other sceptical growth in the skin which causes inflammation. These growths are often confused as skin infections.
- Change in normal skin colour. This colour is generally dark brown or red in color. This area sometimes causes inflammation.
Skin Cancer Stages:-
- Stage 1:-
At this stage, the size of the tumor is very small. The tumor has not spread throughout the body parts and has not even damaged the lymph nodes. The size of tumor at this stage is generally less than 2cm in diameter. Surgery is the only treatment recommended at this stage. In this procedure the location of the tumor is cut and the tumor is removed with the help of a certain device. After this various medications are prescribed which prevent the recurrence of this tumor. The survival rate for this tumor is generally around 5 to 6 years. Diagnosis of the tumor at this stage is very easy as the tumor is clearly visible at the location.
- Stage 2:-
This cancer is bigger in size than the previous stage. The average size of tumor at this stage is more than 5 cm. This tumor has not spread to the lymph nodes yet. There are several ulcers that are visible at the location of the tumor. These ulcers are red or pale yellow in colour. This tumor can be removed successfully from the body. The survival rate of this tumor is about 5 to 6 years. Surgery is again considered as the best treatment on this tumor at this stage as other treatments can have side effects on the body. At this stage, there are possibilities of spread of the tumor at distant sites. Sometimes, instead of surgery other therapies may be recommended.
- Stage 3:-
At this stage, the tumor, starts gaining severity and starts affecting the lymph nodes. The size of tumor is larger than the previous stages. At this stage the various pimples, lumps and moles are observed at the location. These moles are red and pale yellow in colour. Sometimes, the inflammation caused by the tumor is severe. It is extremely important to cure skin cancer at this stage or the tumor may start spreading to other parts of the body. Cryotherapy and topical chemotherapy are the best treatments for curing this tumor. In cryotherapy, liquid nitrogen is injected near the location which freezes the tumor and the malignant cells. Later they can be removed with the help of surgery. In topical chemotherapy, a certain lotion is prescribed. This lotion when applied destroys the tumor and the malignant cells completely.
- Stage 4:-
This stage is considered as the last stage of the tumor. At this stage the tumor is in the severer form. The tumor cells have completely damaged the lymph nodes and other areas of the body part. There are also the possibilities of spread of the tumor to other parts of the body such as brain, liver, and lungs. The survival rate for this tumor is about 4 to5 years. Radiotherapy is the best treatment option for this tumor as it helps to destroy the tumor at a rapid rate. In this treatment, highly transmissible radioactive waves are passed throughout the body. These waves kill the tumor and the malignant cells on the spot.
Skin cancer stages depend upon penetration and thickness of the tumor. Thicker the tumor more is its spread throughout the body parts. Higher the stage more difficult it is to diagnose and treat the tumor successfully.
