Skin cancer is a tumor that occurs when the outer layers of the skin get exposed directly to the ultraviolet radiations. Skin cancer survival rate is high as the tumor of this cancer can be treated at any stage. Survival rate is calculates by considerding the symotms abserved observed at different stages and the kind of treatment conducted to cure it.

Skin cancer is classified into three types:

  • Malignant cell carcinoma
  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma

Malignant cell carcinoma is considered as the most dangerous form of skin cancer. In this tumor, moles appear in the area of location in an asymmetrical manner. This tumor tends to grow rapidly and the location appears to be more than 5mm in diameter. Basal cell carcinoma is a skin tumor that is fleshy in color. In this cancer, ulcers and moles occur in the area of location are generally red or pale yellow in colour.

Squamous cell carcinoma is a type of skin neoplasm that tends to grow in a rapid manner. In this tumor, various bumps and moles are seen. Various patches may also be seen in this tumor which is generally crusted, red and pale yellow in color. Bumps and moles are dome shaped and are also referred as keratoacanthomas.

Skin cancer survival rate generally varies according to the stage and type of the tumor. When compared to other tumors, skin cancer tumor rates are usually high as there are diagnosing and treatment techniques available which help to detect the tumor accurately and so treatment can be carried out within no time. The symptoms that arise in this tumor are easy to diagnose but in most cases they are confused with minor skin infections.

The maximum survival rate of a patient diagnosed with the severest stage is considered to be minimum 5 years and there are 70 percent chances of getting recovered from the tumor successfully.

Skin cancer survival rate according to the stages:

In the first stage, the survival rate is generally high as the size of the tumor is very small and it stays at the location itself. Symptoms observed are very minor and so it is confused with some minor infection. Survival rate at this stage can be 100 percent if the tumor is removed completely from the body. Surgery is considered as the best treatment at this stage.

In the second stage, the survival rate is the survival rate goes down to 95 percent. At this stage, the size of diameter at the location of the tumor is more than 4 cm. The tumor stays at the location and starts affecting the surrounding areas and the lymph nodes. This stage gets detected easily as there are various moles visible which are red or pale yellow in color Skin cancer survival rate is high at this stage as it is very easy to detect the tumor and carry out the further treatment techniques.

In the third stage, the survival rate gets dropped down to 85 percent as the tumor starts attaining a level of severity. In this tumor red moles are spotted at the location. These moles cause inflammation and the size of the tumor increases to 6mm. This tumor also starts spreading to other parts of the body and hence it is extremely important to remove the tumor at this stage. Topical chemotherapy is considered as the best treatment option at this stage where a cream is applied at the location. This cream destroys the tumor and the malignant cells and prevents their recurrence.

In the fourth stage, the survival rate is low as compared to other stages as the tumor has already damaged the lymph nodes. Skin cancer survival rate at this stage is expected to be around 75 percent and normally takes time to get cured. According to American Cancer Research, the survival rate of this cancer is around 6 to 7 years if no treatment is conducted to cure skin cancer. Radiotherapy and Immunotherapy are considered as the best treatments at this stage.

Skin cancer survival rate is determined on the basis of various factors such as:-

  • Size of the tumor
  • Its location on the body part
  • Severity of the tumor
  • Age and medical history of the patient

The survival rates derived in the 80s in the United States and Africa when this disease had become a major problem in men were as follows:-

The United States

  • 42 percent in men
  • 45 percent in women

  • 46 percent in men
  • 49 percent in women

Skin cancer survival rates have increased as new advanced techniques have been introduced in the diagnosis and treatment sector which help to detect the tumor accurately and so the treatment can be carried out successfully. However, the survival rates of this tumor are relatively low in men than women as it has been observed that men do not take care of their skin properly.
