Throat cancer is a type of tumor that occurs when the malignant tissues attack the cells of the throat. Due to this, a tumor gets developed in the inner lining of the throat. According to a research conducted by American Cancer Institute, more than 30,000 people are diagnosed with this tumor every year. The main causes of this cancer are excessive smoking, tobacco consumption and alcohol consumption. Throat cancer awareness is an overall analysis of the symptoms, causes, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. As this cancer is of serious type, it is extremely important to spread awareness regarding this tumor.

Symptoms of this cancer are as follows:-

  • Constant cough
  • Constant fever
  • Difficulty in swallowing food
  • Sore throat
  • Coughing up of blood
  • Excessive weight loss
  • Ulcers in the area of throat

It is very important to detect these symptoms at early stages to remove the tumor successfully from the body. As the tumor continues to develop, more severe symptoms can be observed. If the tumor is treated before it affects the lymph nodes, there are no chances of recurrence of the tumor.

Causes of this cancer are as follows:-

  • Excessive smoking of cigarettes
  • Consumption of tobacco
  • Consumption of alcohol
  • Over exposure to ultraviolet radiations
  • Human papillomavirus
  • Leukoplakia

It is extremely important to avoid these causes in order to prevent the occurrence of this tumor. Causes of this cancer result into genetic mutations which destroy the healthy cells. Due to this, the quantity of malignant cells in the area of throat increases due to which this tumor is caused.

Diagnosis of throat cancer:-

Before diagnosing this tumor, a physical examination is conducted. In this examination, heart beat rate, audiograms and pulmonary functioning of the body is examined. A one-on-one session is conducted where the patient is asked questions about his eating habits and lifestyle. This exam is followed by X-rays, Biopsy, Magnetic resonance imaging test, biopsy and metascopy. Among all these tests, biopsy and metascopy are well known for detecting the tumor accurately. In biopsy, a piece of tumor is removed from the body with the help of a special needle. This piece is later examined under a microscope with the help of some special tests. Metascopy is a recent breakthrough in the diagnosis sector of the disease. In metascopy, a metascope is inserted into the area of the tumor. This metascope emits certain radiations with the help of which pictures of the tumor are developed. These pictures give a perfect idea of the location of tumor and its spread throughout the body. This procedure is yet to be approved by the Parenteral Drug Administration (PDA).

Treatment of Throat cancer:-

Treatment of this cancer is done with the help of several techniques. These techniques include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy and photodynamic therapy. Amongst all these techniques, targeted therapy and radiation therapy are widely used for the treatment of this tumor.

In this therapy, certain drugs are prescribed for the removal of the tumor. These drugs travel throughout the body and destroy the malignant cells and the tumor successfully. A certain time interval is set for the treatment of this tumor. If continued for a long period of time, these drugs can have enormous effects on the body. Side effects of this tumor include hair loss, appetite loss, rashes on he skin, redness over skin etc.

Radiation therapy:-

In this therapy, highly transmissible radioactive waves are travelled throughout the body. These rays destroy the malignant cells and the tumor on the spot and also prevent the further spread of this tumor. This treatment is side effect free and so it is mostly performed for the cure of the disease.

Targeted therapy:-

This therapy involves prescription of certain drugs which block the malignant cells and the tumor. These cells are later removed with the help of surgery and certain medications are prescribed which prevent the recurrence of the tumor.

Photodynamic therapy:-

In this therapy, a combination of photosynthesizing drugs with light is used. A certain wavelength is created in the area of the tumor. The photosensitive drugs help to kill the malignant cells and the tumor and thus this cancer is eradicated completely from the body. Throat cancer awareness thus provides us with all the vital information regarding the occurrence of the tumor. Various other awareness techniques are being used by certain research organizations and institutions to spread awareness regarding this disease.
