Throat cancer is a type of tumor that occurs when the malignant cells attack the tissues of throat. This cancer is also known as the larynx cancer. This cancer affects more than 30,000 people every year in America. This cancer is mostly seen in people above 50 years of age. Cigarette Smoking, tobacco consumption and alcohol consumption are considered as the main causes of this tumor. Diagnosing this cancer at early stages helps to cure this tumor successfully. Other throat cancer causes include exposure to UV light, environmental factors, human papillomavirus and chemicals used at workplaces. Treatment techniques for this tumor include chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. Among these, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are highly recommended and widely used for the treatment of this tumor.

Before understanding throat cancer causes, it is very important to have a brief idea about the symptoms of this disease. Symptoms of throat cancer include:-

  • Consumption of tobacco :-

    Consumption of tobacco is considered as one of the major causes of throat cancer. Substances present in tobacco get stuck in the area of throat due to which the inner lining of the throat gets damaged. The effects of smokeless tobacco are more adverse as very fine particles of nicotine are present. This causes inflammation and swelling in the inner area of throat. Hence consumption of tobacco should be avoided to prevent throat cancer.

  • Consumption of alcohol :-

    Consumption of alcohol is also considered as one of the major symptoms of the disease. Alcohol tends to completely damage the area of throat and also kills the cells in the path of esophagus. A survey conducted by Stamford University of Cancer Research shows that out of 10 people who consume alcohol on a daily basis, 7 people are diagnosed with this tumor.

  • Exposure to Ultraviolet Light :-

    Continuous exposure to Ultraviolet radiations is also considered as an important cause of throat. Continuous exposure to these harmful radiations damages the upper part of throat area. As a result the person suffers from continuous cough and in future stages even blood is thrown out through the passage.

  • Leukoplakia :-

    Leukoplakia is a type of disease which generally occurs due to excessive smoking consumption of alcohol and consumption of unhealthy food stuffs. Due to unhealthy diet, enough nutrition is not provided to the area of the throat. As a result the passage turns weak. Due to this, white patches are observed in the throat and cheeks of the person. In advanced stages, these white patches can be observed throughout the body.

  • Human Papillomavirus :-

    Human papillomavirus is a sexually transmitted virus that damages the mucous membranes and keratinocytes of the skin. It also tends to damage the anogenital region which can further result into genital warts. The tumor of this disease also damages other areas such as vulva, vagina, anus and cervix. There are more than 30 types of Human Pappilomavirus. This disease is mainly observed in women than men. The person suffering from this disease is not only prone to throat cancer but can also suffer from cervical cancer and lung cancer.

Throat cancer causes should be avoided to prevent the occurrence of this tumor. It is very important to diagnose the symptoms of this tumor at early stages. If they are detected, this tumor can be successfully removed from the body. There are rare options available for diagnosing this tumor. However, due to recent breakthroughs, new techniques have been introduced in the diagnosis and treatment sector of the disease.
