Throat cancer is a type of tumor that occurs in the area of the throat. This tumor affects the inner lining of the throat which results into constant cough and fever. It also causes difficulty in swallowing of food stuffs due to which constant weight loss is experienced. Throat cancer research helps us to understand the different breakthroughs made in the diagnosing and treatment sector of the disease.

Latest throat cancer research includes an ayurvedic treatment for the cure of the tumor. In this treatment, various ayurvedic medicines like Punarnavadi - Guggulu, Yashtimadhuk, Tulsi, Haritaki, Sunthi , Marich etc. These medicines help to treat the tumor without harming the normal cells. It also helps to prevent the widespread of the tumor to other parts of the body. However this treatment is still not implemented as it takes time to treat the tumor.

Other ayurvedic forms of medicines used to cure this tumor include Heerak- Bhasma, Shatavari, Nagbala and Samudradosh. These medicines are generally prescribed after the tumor gets healed. They help to improve the quality of life.

A research conducted by an American University shows that men are 15 times more risky to this tumor than women. It also concludes that the rate of occurrence reduced in people who left smoking.

The latest research in treatment sector shows that laser therapy works best for the cure of this tumor as it saves the vocal cord from getting damaged. Thus, the normal voice of the person can be retained after this therapy.

Throat cancer breakthrough in the diagnosis sector includes a new procedure called Metascopy. In this procedure, a metascope is inserted into the body. This object emits infrared radiations which help to detect the tumor and the spread of malignant cells throughout the body. However, Biopsy is considered as the best diagnosing technique on this tumor where the location of tumor is discovered and a piece of tumor is cut from the location. This piece is later examined under a microscope and several other tests are conducted. This test helps to give an accurate analysis of the tumor.

The latest research in treatment sector includes Targeted Therapy and Photodynamic Therapy. In Targeted therapy certain medications are prescribed which block the growth of tumor cells. Then a surgery is performed through which the tumor cells are removed completely from the body. This treatment is criticized as a study shows that there are more than 5 percent chances of recurrence.

In photodynamic therapy, a combination of photosynthesizing agents and light is used to kill the tumor cells. In this therapy, a certain wavelength is created at the location of the tumor with the help of the laser light. This combination completely destroys the tumor cells and its spread throughout the body.

Various researches are being conducted in other treatment techniques like chemotherapy and radiation therapy so that the recurrence rate of the tumor can be reduced. The latest throat cancer breakthrough includes introduction of a medication called Cetuximab. This drug has a special epidermal growth factor receptor which helps to give an intravenous fusion while treating this tumor. This drug has been introduced in North America and is also used in combination with chemotherapy drugs.

Throat cancer breakthrough also includes an introduction of Positron Emission Tomography exam for detection of this tumor. This exam is a sensitive imaging test in which radioactive waves are used to examine the function of the malignant cells in the body. This helps to recognize the type of tumor and its spread. So the treatment can be started accordingly.

Throat cancer research has always been an interesting topic of research for the scientists worldwide as the tumor tends to kill more than 25 percent people out of the total people diagnosed per year. Various throat cancer breakthroughs are being made in the diagnosis and treatment sector of the disease which will help to diagnose the tumor accurately and reduce the recurrence rate of the tumor.
